Bio
Dr. Babb is a Senior Fellow with the MacDonald Laurier Institute in Ottawa, an International Fellow at the Institute for National Security Studies in Tel Aviv, a Fellow with the Royal United Services Institute in London, England, and an Instructor of International Security at the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs in Ottawa, Canada. He's also a strategic advisor to Secure Canada in Toronto, and a Research Fellow with the renowned Max and Tessie Zelikovitz Centre for Jewish Studies in Ottawa.
While Dr. Babb’s scholarly research on a variety of subjects, including terrorism and cyber conflict, has been published worldwide, he is perhaps most well-known for his expertise on Israeli national security and his advocacy and efforts related to studying and combating antisemitism.
His views and expertise on antisemitism, Jewish life, and Israel have been featured in numerous publications, including in The Hill, The Spectator, The Globe and Mail, The Times of Israel, Newsweek, The National Post, The Jerusalem Post, The Hub, The Cipher Brief, and many others. As one of the country's foremost experts on confronting Jew-hatred and Israeli national security, Dr. Babb’s commentary on these issues has been sought by some of the world’s largest news outlets, including CNN, the CBC, the BBC, FOX News, CTV News, Global News, The Sun, NewsNation, and countless others.
He holds degrees in Political Science and International Development (BA) from Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, International Relations (MA) from York University in Toronto, and International Relations (Ph.D.) from the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs at Carleton University, in Ottawa.
Academic Courses in International Affairs Taught by Dr. Babb
In addition to his extensive experience and contributions in the fields of international security, terrorism, and geopolitics, Dr. Babb has taught a variety of graduate-level courses at the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs (NPSIA) at Carleton University. His teaching covers key areas of global concern, such as terrorism, interstate conflict, and weapons of mass destruction. Below is a selection of courses he offered:
INAF 5244: Terrorism and International Security
Contemporary international terrorism in comparative perspective, including religious and ideological motivations, recruitment and participation, evolving structures and dynamics of terror networks, financing and operations, and counter-terrorism measures. Examples are drawn from international and domestic terrorism.
INAF 5201: Disarmament, Arms Control and Nonproliferation
Origins, theory and practice, with a focus on so-called weapons of mass destruction and current controversies. Emphasis on treaty negotiation and implementation, including monitoring, verification, facilitation and enforcement of compliance.
INAF 5800: Asia Pacific Economic and Political Relations
The evolving pattern of economic and political relations in the Asia-Pacific region. Topics will include security issues; trade and investment; and development cooperation; institutional arrangements, including ASEAN, APEC, AFTA, and Canada's role in the regional affairs.
